A specialized therapy service for individuals dealing with gambling addiction has been inaugurated. The Bristol-based hub, initiated by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP), marks the beginning of such facilities.
The service will provide various interventions, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), catering to the needs of those grappling with gambling disorders. Chris Gillmore, clinical lead for AWP’s South West Gambling Service, emphasized that the hub will offer individuals access to the latest evidence-based treatments and support.
He noted, “Gambling disorder significantly impacts individuals’ lives and has been recognized as a priority by the national and regional NHS.” Gillmore highlighted the option for patients to self-refer or seek referral through local healthcare professionals, encouraging anyone in need of support to reach out.
In collaboration with Mental Health Matters, H2CD, Togetherall, Dr Julian, and Intuitive Thinking Skills, additional hubs are scheduled to open across the region, including in north Somerset, south Gloucestershire, and Plymouth, by year-end.
Matthew Page, chief operating officer at AWP, underscored the widespread ramifications of harmful gambling, affecting relationships and health. He emphasized the importance of addressing this growing issue and expressed commitment to safeguarding individuals from the detrimental effects of problematic gambling.
