Contributions from casinos to the state’s revenue totaled $70.2 million in December 2023, indicating a 0.7% increase from the previous year. These funds significantly support various sectors, including the Education Trust Fund, community development initiatives, the Maryland horse racing industry, and small, minority- and women-owned businesses.
The state’s six privately owned casinos, featuring an array of slot machines and table games, comprise MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, Ocean Downs Casino, Hollywood Casino Perryville, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort.
In December 2023, Maryland’s casino revenue presented varied trends across its six major venues. MGM National Harbor led with $70.8 million, signaling a 2.1% surge compared to 2022. Live! Casino & Hotel followed, reporting $60.6 million, marking a 1.5% rise from the previous year. In contrast, Horseshoe Casino experienced a notable downturn, recording $15.2 million, reflecting a 9.6% decrease. Ocean Downs Casino accounted for $7 million, showcasing a 2.7% decline, while Hollywood Casino saw an uptick, amassing $7.6 million, a 4.0% increase. Finally, Rocky Gap Casino posted $4.4 million, marking an 8.2% decrease compared to December 2022.
November 2023 exhibited a reduction in gaming revenue, totaling $157.7 million, showing a 3.5% downturn from the preceding year. There were notable disparities among individual casinos, with Horseshoe Casino Baltimore experiencing a significant 10.6% decrease. In contrast, Live! Casino & Hotel and Hollywood Casino Perryville demonstrated growth, showing increases of 1.6% and 0.1%, respectively.
Notwithstanding the slight decrease in casino revenue, the state reported growth in gaming revenue from other sources. October 2023 marked the highest month for sports wagering at $5.8 million. In total, casinos contributed $66.2 million to the state, with $47.7 million allocated to the Education Trust Fund.
